HOW TO: Use geolocation tools to promote your event

Businesses are using Facebook places, Gowalla and Foursquare to reward customers who check-in to their event. Its free promotion for the event and the user is rewarded for a simple click. Its win-win!

Below are some tips to promote your event with these tools:

1. Create a unique venue for the event
Share tips about the event to make the attendees experience better. At most events people spend a few minutes sussing out the layout, but if its fun and the guide has already been setup, its much more comfortable. You can provide special offers, highlight speakers or performers, great places to eat and even introduce the attendees to your sponsor.

2. Set up mini venues within the venue

This is great to split up the different parts of your event, you could create a “bar venue”, a “restaurant venue” and if you were running a conference, you could event set up a venue for each exhibitor. Its all free promotion. What is cool about this is that each attendee creates a little bit of buzz and this can create momentum inside the event. If you can see that lots of people are checking in at the bar, you now know that’s where the action is.

3. Reward people to share
Reward people who check in, this way they know that this sharing works at your event and their motivation to share more increases. A reward could be a drink, an after party pass, it’s totally up to you and your imagination.
